Property Renovations

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a full property renovation take in the UK, and what does it involve?
A full property renovation typically takes 3-6 months for a standard three-bedroom house, or 6-12 months for larger or more complex projects. The process involves structural assessments, obtaining necessary planning permission and Building Regulations approval, stripping out existing fixtures and fittings, addressing any structural issues, updating electrical and plumbing systems to current UK standards (17th/18th Edition wiring and Part G plumbing regulations), plastering, installing new kitchens and bathrooms, flooring, decorating, and final snagging. For listed buildings or properties in conservation areas, additional approvals and specialist techniques may extend timelines. We manage the entire process including coordinating trades, Building Control inspections, and ensuring compliance with all UK regulations.
Can you renovate while the owners are living in the property?
Yes, when safe and practical. If not, we offer phased renovation plans.
Do I need to move out during a full property renovation?
For full property renovations, we typically recommend moving out to ensure safety, faster completion, and better quality of work. However, it's sometimes possible to phase the work and remain in occupation, particularly in larger properties where we can create sealed-off work zones with dust barriers and maintain access to essential facilities. Factors to consider include the extent of structural work, whether utilities (water, gas, electricity) need disconnecting, presence of asbestos (common in pre-2000 UK properties), noise and dust levels, and health and safety requirements under CDM Regulations. Living on-site can extend project timelines by 20-30% due to restricted working hours and access limitations.
